Space Telescope & Satellite Cryocoolers of Free Piston Stirling Cooler’s Application

Cooling very sensitive instruments in space requires specialized cryocoolers (not always exactly FPSC, but conceptually similar mechanical cryogenic coolers):

2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4

1.Diagram of cryocooling on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), showing the location of the cryocooler supporting a mid-IR instrument.

2.Hardware photo of an actual cryocooler, like used on space missions to cool detectors down to cryogenic temperatures.

3.Example of a cryocooler unit used in space infrared detection systems (illustrative).

4.Close-up of a cryogenic cooler cold head and components seen in research/instrument development.

Space instruments (Earth observation, astronomy, planetary probes) often use cryocoolers to chill focal planes of spectrometers and cameras to ∼40 K or below so that thermal noise doesn’t overwhelm the signal.
